So what the hell is happening with Rasual Butler? And how will the Hornets react? How does a guy go from being a key bench player, a sometimes starter, to the guy wearing a suit, the position on the end of the bench that as early as the beginning of this season was reserved for rookies who’d barely seen any time, if at all, on an NBA floor.
A season over and gone and now he’s the one sitting in the back of an SUV, a gun on the floor, the cops coming for him, and him seeing how low he’s fallen. While I give Rasual a lot of credit for self-cognizance, it’s nonetheless a haunting image of personal tragedy. Thereafter, part of Coach Scott’s response to the situation was: “he had some personal problems [this year] that were going on that kind of caused him not to be with us, so to speak, and all that affected him.” Hmmm. It was the first I heard of it. While I feel for Rasual, I have to wonder how the team will react. They’re gearing up to win a championship. And no matter Byron’s relationship with him, it’s Bower, Shinn, and the team’s lawyers who will decide the response.
We don’t know what Butler’s specific contract says, but section 16(a) of the Uniform Player Contract provides:
The Team may terminate this Contract upon written notice to the Player if the Player shall: (i) at any time, fail, refuse, or neglect to conform his personal conduct to standards of good citizenship, good moral character (defined here to mean not engaging in acts of moral turpitude, whether or not such acts would constitute a crime).
Section 16(g) provides:
Upon any termination of this Contract by the Player, all pay Compensation shall cease on the date of termination, Team to pay the Player’s Compensation to said date.
Rumor mills said the team had been looking to shop Rasual and his remaining two years and $7.5 mil for quite a while. Could this be the easy out? The trickiest part, of course is proof. You can’t just drop a guy if you don’t know for sure he did something wrong. He’s accused of waving a gun after an altercation at a group of men and cocking the hammer back. Butler said he didn’t do anything wrong, and specifically denied cocking it at anyone. But was he waving it around? Did he pull it out? We need also to understand the context. Was he fooling around, defending himself, or just straight thugging? These are key questions that the team will need answers to if they’re going to take that much money away from him. The last thing they want to do is get in a lawsuit with him over whether his termination was wrongful under his contract. But if they can justify it, it would help their salary cap situation right? Fill his spot with someone like Adam Haluska, Shaun Pruitt, or some other undrafted free agent who they can pay something more like $400,000 a year. Pretty good bargain for someone who wasn’t getting any burn anyway.
On the other hand, do the Hornets have a responsibility to help him if he is having personal problems? The one answer, as suggested above, is no. It’s a business. And that’s how it is. Cutthroat. But this year we’ve seen a Hornets team that became more than just a team; they became a family. They were devastated when they lost Bobby midseason, but were able to turn around and welcome Mike James and Bonzi with open arms. So how would they react if Butler was cut? Would they blame Rasual? Would they blame the management? Would it change how the team views each other and the bonds they share? What do they know about Rasual’s off-the court issues to which Byron alluded? There are also the facts that Rasual is a team player, taking his benching with class, and being generally supportive of the team’s direction. He also reportedly has done plenty of good works, like flying supplies to Africa at his own cost.
Only the team knows what they’re going to do in free agency. But if cutting Butler under the conduct clause gets us room to bring in Corey Maggette, do it. Monta Ellis, sure. If it will completely push us into contention for a title, do it. Because to bring in someone equally troubled, and not necessarily a good fit, like Ron Artest, would be hypocritical; as would it be cut Rasual to bring in someone who’s unproven and/or unreliable, like Ben Gordon. What I’m saying is that if we cut Rasual, we better get our money’s worth, not straddle ourselves with debt on a stupid risk. Sure take anyone on a $5 mil mid-level exception, but that’s a different story. I guess what I’m really saying is that cutting a guy who is having personal problems for making a stupid mistake is not the best moral choice, and if you’re going to cross that line, you better be sure it’s worth it.
I expect the Hornets to go slow. But I feel for Rasual. I really do. Without more information, though, I feel like I should give him the benefit of the doubt. I believe he did a dumb thing and regrets it. I know some people have already labeled him a thug or this or that. But before anyone calls him out, ask what you may have done between the hours of 1 and 7 a.m. outside of any drinking establishment at some time in your life. My record’s not spotless. I’ve made mistakes. I’d hate to see any of them ruin my career. So that’s my response as a human. Give him another chance. Bring him back into the fold. But I get that the Hornets are in it to win. Period. I wouldn’t want any less. But if they let him go, I hope it’s with done with decency. I hope they give him some kind of exit support. And I hope they recommend him to other teams as someone who with a fresh start could flourish. It’d be the right thing to do.
But until we know more, we just have to wait and see.
Man, this is tough. For my moral compass it comes down to how hard he has been working to get back in the rotation since shuffling down the bench. Does he desperately want to play and contribute but personal issues have gotten in the way, or has he kinda given up and been going through the motions (independent of whether he has been a supportive and enthusiatic locker room figure)? I don’t think under any circumstances any athelete (read: role model) waving a gun around deserves 7.5 million over 2 years, whether he’s a starter or a bench jockey. But I also don’t agree with dropping a trouble team member out in the cold. If someone isn’t coping with the fame and pressure being a part of the organisation made possible (which seems to be the most likely case for ‘personal problems’), the organisation has a responsibility to help. He is more than his contract. Then again I don’t think someone who behaves like that deserves the reward of that kind of contract. Wow. Tough.
I just don’t know what kind of support the Hornets could give him if he wasn’t on that contract. In my mind the best solution would be something like abandon his contract, but then resign him to a one year minimum deal with the promise of the second year of his original contract if he works hard and cleans his act up (and not just because of the money it saves the Hornets but because although he deserves another chance, he needs to prove he will use it). I know that isn’t possible but it seems like a fair way to go.
I am definitely sad for Rasual and the Hornets though.
I feel quite sad for rasual, and i don’t really think we should just cut him before knowing the entire thing, in every single part of it…rasual has always been a good player, on and off the court, and it’s quite clear he had personal problems this year, he hasn’t played like he was used to, and it was quite disappointing for the fans, and i’m sure, for the team, the organizations and himself too. Sincerely, it’s obvious that bower and hinn and the others have to think and do what they have to do about him, but still, if i was about to do it, i’d give him another chance, and i’d love the solution saltandcarbon wrote, even if not possible, because rasual has been part of this organization, and this is really a family, i know they’d be all sad if he was cut, and i think like i said he deserves another chance, i think that after this summer he could be again the butler we all loved. But if they wouldn’t want to keep him, i hope they really recommend him to other teams, or anyways they try to help him in some ways, business is business, but we are all human, not bots…hope for the best to happen
Rasual Butler is a great player who had a bad season, people forget that the season before this previous one he was a pivotal player so he deserves to be treated like that. Also if the Hornets truly became a family then why would they turn on one of their own without finding out any evidence that he actually did anything. We all make mistakes(just ask Chris Andersen) so we all deserve a chance to go through the system and see what happens. I still think that Butler could turn it around and be a huge part in the Hornets system. If we could get him playing the way he used to a bench unit with him and some of the more energetic players on the roster would be amazing.
I think it’s great that so many are being supportive of Rasual. I too think he’s bound to bounce back next year, though it remains to be seen where. With the Hornets reportedly targeting Corey Maggette now, the Clips Nation blog is hoping such a deal might include a sign and trade for Mike James and Rasual here: http://www.clipsnation.com/2008/6/28/560996/hornets-targeting-maggette. That would be a win-win for both teams. They get two talented players, who if playing up to their potential are worth their money, and if not, well, they got something for losing a player for whom they could have gotten nothing. Rasual would get his fresh start. And we, of course, would get Maggette. Just rumors at this point. But damn.
That would be a great result for us and a not bad result for the Clips, and possibly a terrific move for Rasual. I like it for the Hornets and Butler because it means his contract still has value and he can reboot his considerable talent in a new environment. I’d be a little concerned that the LA market is too harsh and/or distracting were it not for Dunleavy at the helm. He seems like a great personality coach and could help Rasual if he is having troubles. And Mike James for that matter. Heck, maybe Ely would go too and we could play Andersen back into some form.
How sweet could Maggette be on Chris’ wing…
I’m not too worried about Butler. He’s proven to be an effective player and if not us, then I’m almost certain he’ll sign elsewhere. Now I don’t know the whole situation behind Butler (especially what Coach Scott said… hmm), but according to ‘waving a gun… and cocking the hammer back’, that action is dangerous and potentially ignorant, but I hope nobody innocent was hurt in the process more importantly.
To be honest, I’m not too sure about Corey Maggette. He’s very much a starter-esque player, so would we he be switching spots with Mo Pete? But team chemistry aside, his stats would appear to bolster our roster (especially given mW’s proposed trade. We hardly used both to their abilities) and provide us with some much needed physicality and defensive presence. Plus, look at that guy’s muscles. They’re so ripped and just bulg… um, ah… ahem.
We need to be careful about our 1 spot though if said trade goes through. Pargo just opted out, so he’s going to renegotiate (even if elsewhere) for more, and Maggette ain’t cheap himself, this being his last year at ~8 mil (according to HoopsHype). While the $$$ works out, it leaves Chris Paul and Hilton Armstrong as our primary ball handlers… and we all know how Big Hilton is with the ball, hehe. Sigh, I guess I can come out of retirement and play one last year… y’know, just for the sake of helping the team. Jeff Bower, just gimme the word. I don’t even a name on the jersey.
Lol let’s use juju as a playmaker or sign shaun livingston for the minimum
The PG situation definitely needs watching. And yes, I do anticipate a trade and/or FA signing of Maggette to relegate Mo-Pete to the bench. However, if they could then get Pargo signed, as he claims to want, that leaves a second team of Pargo, Mo, Ju-Ju, and Hilton, potentially adding Ely, Bowen and/or Birdman, at the 4. That would be sweet.
but then there is the fact that Peterson wanted a starting position, and may put out a season like that of Rasual Butlers 07/08 season if he is moved to the bench
Two words on Butler: Players Union.
Something’s got to be going on with Rasual – did you guys see this story? Pimps?
