Both ESPN and CNN-SI are reporting that, the Hornets have signed James Posey.  Posey, as most of y’all know has been one the most coveted unrestricted free agents this summer.  The reports say he has agreed to a 4-year deal with the Hornets for an estimated $25 million.

To be the best, you gotta….

… sign the best? Who knows? Too much money and he’ll be like 36 when that contract is up. Other than that, great pickup.

I refuse to poo-poo this deal. Now, lets trade some dead weight off the bench to keep under the luxury tax.

  4. ticktock6 says:

Only if he promises to buy a teal and purple striped mouthguard like his green/white one. :-D

How about a full-chest Fleur de Bee tattoo? :)

The good news is by giving him the full MLE, the Hornets can now look away from the free agent market, and focus on re-signing their own players, or possibly making trades. They know they can’t sign anyone else, and just have to fit the rest of the pieces under the luxury tax. If I recall correctly, one of our fellow bloggers noted that last year they were about $100k under the luxury tax. Good spending, that is.

They can still sign a scrubbier vet for the league veteran minimum, can they not?

  8. mW says:

I think so. I’m also not sure how the cap limitations apply to rookies, i.e., unsigned guys on their summer league team.

Good for 2 years, but this may end up biting us back, just strictly considering the price and long-term commitment. But I like having him on the bench, though it would relegate Mo Pete, JuJuBear, or potentially Ninja Turtle/Rasual even deeper into the bench obscurity. But it’ll bolster our team, so I’m interested to see the lineups Coach Scott concocts.

Not a fan of Posey (or any Miami Heat from 2005), but akin Bobby Jackson, I’ll root for you as long as you wear teal (or blue for the Mavs). And another X-man on our team… I like that.

Time to find a replacement 1 and 5 now. Don’t fail me now Hilton.

Posey’s not going to take minutes away from Julian…They were probably looking to move Peja’s down a smidge just so the odds of him having another healthy season go up.

I agree though that this deal isn’t bad the first two years, but after that it does kind of become an albatross. But not a horrible one. At least it becomes a trading chip.

So with starters Paul, Peterson, Peja, West, Tyson and a bench lineup of Pargo, Wells(I hope we keep them), Wright, Posey, and Armstrong/Ely(whoever wants it more I guess) that makes us solid at at least 8 of 10 positions(Pete is iffy sometimes and we are weak at backup center so…..still pretty good). GOOD YEAR IN 09

    That t-shirt is HOT.

    I want one NOW :)

Part of me thought we should get artest but the veteran fan in me knew we’d need a better defender off the bench, one of the main reasons the C’s won the championship is that their bench wasn’t just players who could hold the floor while their starters rested but because they had bench players who could come in and have a starters impact on the game. The way Posey was used to shut down some great players last season was amazing and hopefully he’ll give us that same strength. With his size he can guard just about anyone and he even gave bigger men problems because he contained them and they couldn’t move with the ball. So it’ll be interesting to see if we can get Wright up to his level this team will be tops in defense next year.
