Yeah, yeah, the Hornets won tonight. They looked great, etc., etc. Whatever, they played the Boomers. And if they don’t win by 20 again tomorrow night I’ll hurl. Let’s talk about basketball in general. Ryan Bowen. A great man. Works his ass off, even though he hasn’t even dressed for several games this year. He finally got some time tonight and looked stellar. Point? He makes a little over a million a year. Quite a bargain, relatively speaking. But, now, imagine if at practice he told Byron he didn’t feel like playing that night. Nope. He would rather sit out. Coach Scott would punch him in the face and tell Bower to trade him the next day. For a million a year.
Stephon Marbury, of the New York Knickerbockers, makes over TWENTY million a year. Dude, I don’t even know what that means. It’s a lot. If you really do the math, any one of us could live on that much money alone ($20 mil) for the rest of our life, and just live off the interest, forgetting the principal. So this bastard, who just happened to make this much in ONE YEAR, told his coach he didn’t feel like playing tonight. If I was D’Antoni, I would tell him that’s “Conduct Detrimental to the Team” and suspend his ass without pay. Who gets paid for not working? Also, just to clarify, I grew up in New York, so this isn’t just hateration. To the contrary, I really, really, want to root for the Knicks. But shit like this makes me ill.
Marbury refuses to take a buy out because he claims he’s “earned” his money. Whatever, I’ve yet to see anything in his career remotely worth $20 mil a year, but fine. Then EARN it. How the hell can he CHOOSE not to play. Can anyone reading this imagine telling their boss, “you know what, I don’t feel like working today. I’m just going to hang around the office and chill.” We all KNOW we’d be fired instantly. Must be nice to have guaranteed money. Shit, I need to get in a union like that.
Oh yeah, the Knicks got blown out tonight. And the Hornets, led by a coach who doesn’t put up with that shit, rocked. You do the math.

So I’m guessing y’all don’t agree with Fletcher Mackel on this one? http://offsideswithfletcher.wordpress.com/2008/11/21/why-not-marbury/
Seriously though, when will he stop this madness?
Oh, hell no. Please…never…don’t even… I think my hornet fandom will achieve a killscreen
I’m thankful we have not heard one peep from Hornets Brass about potential to hire Stephon Marbury, Ron Artest, etc. The closest we have flirted with recently to “bad attitude” guys are Birdman (great attitude but subject to occasional addiction), Bonzi Wells (grew out of it years ago, in more ways than one…), and Rasual (I have a registered firearm and don’t MAKE me pretend to use it…) Butler. I love rooting for a team that shows CLASS 99% of the time. Both Paul Silas and Byron Scott are impeccably classy MEN, and that is reflected in our players. It makes us all proud.
#1 Flethcer Mackel is a moron.
#2 Peter Vescey is a moron.
Seriously, why don’t we just pick up Jason Kidd and run him and Starbury at the 1-2? Maybe we could pick up Vince Carter and see if he’d try too. I’m sure they’d all get along with Byron fabulously.
Honestly, can ANYONE say they would pay Starbury ANYTHING at this point? You know, I can sympathize with people that are underpaid, taking an extra break, sloughing off, or whatever. But as you pay gets commensurate with the work you’re doing, you should feel a responsibility to EARN that money. If you are overpaid, you should sure as hell do everything you can to earn it. So there is absolutely no excuse for making millions and telling your boss you’re not going to work today. Sure you’ll GO to work, out of uniform, and just sit there and watch everyone else work, but not you.
I’m with $nave and especially NOEngineer here. The Bees have put together a class act. No way they disrupt that. I don’t believe anyone really seriously thinks Marbury will be brought in, it’s just a couple of journalists yapping their mouths.
But seriously, am I the only one flipping out over this? If I was Donnie Walsh (Knicks president of operations), I would have the Knicks lawyers scrutinizing Starbury’s contract. His money may be “guaranteed” in the basketball sense, but I would damn sure be looking to find out if he breached that contract, and if they can sue him for that breach. Then you might see Stephon suit up.
Ooh.. mW, maybe we can pull J R Rider and Latrell Sprewell out of retirement too… that would be awesome!
Well, I believe most fans of the NBA are snickering over the Knick’s Starbury problem instead of actually thinking about how much it would suck to have a total piece of trash on your team. Perhaps there is a fringe element that like Starbury’s “Sticking it to the man”. I like to think I can empathize about other people’s points of view, but I hope I’m off the mark on that one.
When your salary is a Powerball payout, you need to actually give a damn about the Knick fans, your teammates, and yourself and get off your ass and play. What organization in their right mind would what Stephon after all this? He better not run through his money.
Stephon is the anti-Mo Pete.
@ Mikey: someone finally gets it.
@ $nave: best quote ever: “Stephon is the anti-Mo Pete.” Gold.
I love the Hornets and their fans.
Starbury was my favourite player for awhile, so it’s difficult to see his career crash and burn faster than Stevie Franchise.
We all know Steph’s pretty ignorant guy, pride and all. However, we forget that he’s just the product of his environment. If we had the ability to produce what Starbury has been able, naturally we’d be surrounded by yes-men and high contracts (further inflating your already ridiculously omnipresent ego). He’s become jaded with his paycheck, yes, but let’s not forget who gave him the paycheck or accepted the contract (read: Knickerbockers). As an organization, you’re always taking risks signing a player like Marbury, high contract and a reputation for egoism.
Again, I see everybody’s disgust and complaints (I don’t expect anybody to agree), but not all the hate should be upon Starbury’s ignorance. It was pretty established since the beginning of his career.
And thanks for that link Alejandro. That pic of CP with those PE XX3s: Siiick.
Oh yeah, Stevie Franchise, another one of my least favorite players ever. Single-handedly destroyed the Vancouver franchise. What a dick.
Stephon Marbury should sell his crappy shoes at Steve and Berry’s. He needs to realize that he is getting paid to play a GAME. A F%$#ing game. You know who likes playing games. Everyone. Pay me to play a game. I wouldn’t sit out one bit. Ungrateful bastard.
