Stop the Madness

By mW on November 22, 2008

Okay.  Seriously.  We’re 10 or so games into the 2008 basketball season, and the most significant headlines are still on the summer of 2010.  Would I like to see Bosh and Wade join CP, sure?  Do I really care now?  No.  That’s Jeff Bower’s job.  And trust me folks, he has his eyes on the situation.  So, you know, I’m just sick of it.  There is a lot of good basketball out there being played now, and maybe we should all focus on that.

Which brings me to my second point about this whole situation.  I got DeShawn Stevenson’s back: Lebron is overrated.  (Author waves his hand in front of his face.)  To tank your next two seasons, as apparently the Knicks are willing to do, is retarded.  So Lebron can explode to the hole and dunk so hard that he almost breaks his wrist.  Woo.  Let me give him $30 mil a year for that.  So he’s freakishly big and fast.   Woo.  You know what James really reminds me of?  Anyone ever see that stupid pseudo-basketball game they play on trampolines, and the dudes just bounce around and jam it hard by coming down to the rim?  Yup.  That’s “_____ James.”  He can score at will.  He can pull his team through the Leastern Conference to the Playoffs.  Let me fall out of my seat.  Just one thing, this is a team sport.  You need to make your teammates better to win.  Lebron doesn’t do that. Instead of focusing on winning in Cleveland, how many of his teammates are thinking who cares what we do now, or how well we gel, or learn our schemes, because this guy is gone after 2010.  And he allows that distraction to go on to the detriment of his team because he likes the media glory.  He likes being called “_______.”

Now, you may be asking yourself, why does this guy keep putting blanks in his post.  It’s this, why the hell do people call him King James?  What does he rule other than marketing revenue? Which, when you think of it, is a self-perpetuating delusion: he’s them most marketable because everyone thinks he’s the best because he’s marketed as the best so we say he’s the best, etc.  But what does he really rule?  The NBA?  Right.  Show me a ring.  College?  Nope, didn’t go.  Oh, right, he was great in high school.  Yeah, so was Shaq, and everyone laughed at him when he said he’d won at every level other than college or pros.  Of course, Shaq shut them all up and got a ring or four.  But “King James”?  Please.

I’ve done a little poking around at titles of nobility.  And I don’t think he measures up to a King.  I considered Duke, but that brings up memories of Hunter S. Thompson, and so that’s way too good for him.  There are already guys in the League with names of Earl, Baron, and Marquis, and that would just be confusing . So I guess we should go with Viscount (pronounced vye-count).  You heard it here first, “Viscount James.”

You want to drool over him in 2010?  Go for it.  But after watching the Olympic games this past summer I honestly wasn’t impressed with James.  He always slowed down ball movement and made us more predictable.  Honestly, it was the CP, Wade, Bosh-driven second unit that impressed me most.  So if you want to put people in seats, feel free to chase VJ.  But if you want a championship, I’d look elsewhere.  Like New Orleans.  And Chris Paul.  You go for the crown, Viscount.  We’ll go for the rings.

  1. Come to New Orleans, CB4! We would love you! … Despite not being able to, you know, pay you.

I think one of the blogs I read yesterday said it best re: the LeBron/Knicks thing: cap space is great, but it’s not very fun to watch for two seasons.

  2. Totally. No offense to TC, but, yeah.

  3. Chris Bosh is from the good city of Dallas, so I’m with you ticktock.

Honestly, I don’t agree with some of this post. Bron Bron does make his team better simply by his presence. His ability to draw 1, 2, maybe 3 defenders is characteristic of an elite player, but he’s surprisingly capable of finding the open man given weakside help, or finishing at the rim (courtesy no-calls).

His slow-paced play could have been attributed to Coach K’s playbook, but again, I’m rather proud to be ignorant of college sports. What I would say is that Bron Bron is probably LESS efficient in the open court, and is better under isolation plays, which emphasizes your complaint of a slower paced game. He’s able to control fast breaks, but I would relegate that responsibility to your backcourt.

But yes, everything Bron Bron does is strictly marketing; the man is all about business. If winning a championship didn’t boost sales, he would be quite sufficient with putting up monster stats and notching 0 ‘chips. He’s stated it before, wanting to be the richest basketball player ever or something.

  4. Agree to disagree on LeBron’s basketball ability, but I’m sticking with the nickname. Viscount James, that’s classic.

  5. Um wow after seeing him take a crappy cleveland team deep into the playoffs for a few years in a row, take boston to seven games(and not get blown out in the last one cough la cough), put up numbers close to a triple double every night, and being able to play so many different positions affectively are just a few of his accomplishments. This is why I never bad mouthed james because he plays hard and he doesn’t bitch out his teammates, he passes the ball a lot if you’ve seen him play and he is just a great all around player. I see more magic johnson in him than anyone else playing today. Of course I will boo his ass in the ground when playing the Hornets but I still respect his game and what he brings to the sport. Maybe you should put a column up bashing a different player whose ass gets kissed on a weekly basis….you know one who isn’t doing that much this year but since his team is stacked with all stars and they are winning he gets credit simply because his name is more well known. Or maybe on a coach who is called one of the greatest but has only ever agreed to coach teams packed with allstars……….maybe.

  6. mW can’t feel his face.

  7. I think the Pistons are going to get queen james. I never did like LJ’s attitude. When he first got drafted I could not believe how poorly he spoke. This is comming from a podunk cajun french speaking family, who says T’s like D’s. He’s gotten better now, but I thought he was Idiot savant or had mild down’s. I dunno.

  8. He does have mad skill.

  9. Didier, Bron Bron is a perfect example of a marketing tool gone right. Normally a cat with all those tats aren’t too marketable (if memory serves me right), but he’s been shaped and sculpted by the graces of Nike, NBA, and whatever other endorsements.

That’s not to detract from his desire to win or whatever, but it does explain his facade. He’s not being true to himself, and for that I will never be that big of a fan of Bron Bron himself.

  10. You know, Viscount James has skill, no doubt. But the question now is it Michael Jordan talent, Kobe Bryant talent? Or is it Tracy McGrady talent, Karl Malone talent? You dig? Time will tell.

  11. Well I’d put in on par with MJ or even a new age big O because he almost averages a triple double and now a days with the pace the game runs compared to the big O’s time that is incredible.
