Hornets Hype

grassroots growing strong

OK, Y’all. Stop.

By ticktock6 on February 19, 2009

So yesterday I was kind of annoyed to hear from several sources that a Hornets employee, who joined the team when they were in Oklahoma City, had made some slightly rant-y Facebook comments regarding New Orleans fans. My negative response to this was on three levels:

1. When I heard about it, I was already previously annoyed by watching Gil and Bob’s cheerful “party line” all evening on CST. I just felt like the comments the organization was making were insulting to fans’ intelligence.

2. I think the Hornets organization probably does not realize sometimes how incredibly sensitive people here still are about the OKC thing. They’ve still got to be REALLY careful, last season notwithstanding.

3. Characterizing New Orleans fans as people who impulsively “give up on”  teams is just inaccurate, when you stop to think for more than three seconds about how they’ve loved a losing football franchise for 42 years.

We are firm defenders of New Orleans at this site. I acknowledge having put this person on a certain List of mine, because I was annoyed. But. I wasn’t expecting this thing to get out of hand, which I think it has. It’s kind of blown up in a way that got really nasty, really fast.

I don’t feel like people’s social lives need to be scrutinized or questioned, even if I don’t agree with the things they say. No one deserves that. So I am deleting all references to this line of conversation from this site. Thanks. Peace out.

  1. I totally disagree. If you are dumb enough to be in PR and not believe what you post on the Internet won’t get back to anyone, well, yeah. I sy she deserves what she gets. Welcome to the web 2.0. If any one wants the scoop talk to me or email me. But as I respect TT6, I won’t say anymore about this person’s comments here. Please do feel free to leave general comments about PR, media spin, and, of course the Hornets. We always love got feedback, agree or not!

  2. Pisses me off that everyone made moves and how the magic got a starting point guard for brian cook……….apparently some teams just hand away stars for no reason at all, CAN WE PLEASE GET RUDY GAY FOR THE SPARE CHANGE IN OUR POCKET SO WE’LL HAVE A COMPLETE SCORER TO COMPLIMENT OUR TEAM I MEAN IT’S MEMPHIS THEY TRADE FOR CRAP.

mW, it was a private blog. And it doesn’t really matter who she is, everyone has a right to a degree of privacy even when online. You dont post with your full name, do you? She was defending her organization, like everyone BUT Dwest did and asked her friends to give it a chance. It might have been spoken in a hasty manner, but again, its her private blog. And the drivel that flowed from it, while perhaps expected in a web 2.0 environment, simply wasnt appropriate OR fair. She is a genuinely nice person who Ive had in my house (unlike everyone who will read this). She simply didnt deserve the horrifically personal attacks she got and continues to get. Stay on point with what she said, like I did when I disagreed with her, but dont drudge up the BS that was coming from it.

  4. ticktock, I think you are being too nice. Of course I don’t want anybody to get in trouble for what they say on their facebook, but I do find her tone very snobbish towards New Orleans fans. She probably needs to work on that.

  5. Which is fine, and I agree with you on the tone, but I don’t really want to condone using gender-based slurs toward someone because people don’t agree with them. Which it sort of looked like it was degenerating into, and which I am not comfortable with for reasons that should be obvious.

  6. Well, I’m not saying any slurs are okay, just criticism. And Matt, Facebook is hardly private. I put almost nothing there on my page because it is effectively public, even though I try to restrict who can see it. As for this site, I don’t use my real name, and pointedly so. Oh yeah, and I’m not a spokesperson for a multi-million dollar sports company.

I’m one of the guys who commented on the LSU site. I think that this kind of thing is more common (something catching fire online and spinning into something bigger than it really is) and I thought the rebuttals were perfectly within bounds. I can understand that some of the attacks were borderline sexist, but then again so is a lot of humor and comedy.

I will never forget the way that San Antonio and Oklahoma City actively and aggressively tried to steal New Orleans’ franchises in the aftermath of Katrina, and I have little tolerance for a carpetbagger from Oklahoma City lecturing New Orleans sports fans for not being loyal.

The only thing I would regret is if the girl actually got in trouble with the Hornets organization for what she put on her Facebook. I don’t think she deserved it to go that far, and I doubt that happened.

  8. @ Tommy. I actually agree with almost 100% of what you said. Whenever you address someone as “you people” that should be a tipoff it’s not worded properly, especially for someone in PR. But I thought about what I posted earlier, and I don’t want to be that person who encourages a slew of mean jokes against someone, that’s all. ‘Cause I want to try to be at least SOMEWHAT professional here (though not very).

I will, however, continue to torment Tracy McGrady and Rafer Alston mercilessly.

    Hahahahaha.

That’s all I can say about this blog! :)

  10. anyone know if tyson will be back tomorrow for the laker game or what, why would he travel with the team if he’s not gonna play with them…….I dunno but against the lakers we need him(two things byron scott should think about, 1 without bynum we should have west on gasol because gasol is heavy but fragile and west always does a good job of containing him, and 2 wright is the best option for a player like kobe because he can and has kept up with him and has contained him before we need to start working on the future of this team and posey is getting kinda slow so we need to get wright some experience under his belt)

  11. YoungFella says:

What do you mean “Posey is getting slow”? He held Durant to 47 the other night.

  12. YoungFella says:

Seriously though – I think Tyson being with the team is good. With any luck they will be closer than ever after this. These past few days could turn out to be a blessing in disguise. Assuming that Tyson is able to come back and play well, I will be as excited about this team as I was at this time last year.
