Wow–that was one fierce smackdown. Good work. People expressing ignorant anti-gay comments in public forums need to be called on it. Not to change their mind, but to let them know we’re not having it anymore. That much they will understand.

Ball Don’t lie is a funny website. Its basketball coverage is some of the smartest around, but the reader comments section contains 99% drivel.

I also wanted to add that Haywood’s apology only compounded his ignorance. I mean, it proved TT6′s point about people being so privileged that they don’t even see that they did anything wrong. That Haywood could think, hey, it’s okay to call mentally deranged people (Marbury) “gay,” we were just kidding around, is insane and negates any apology he may have been trying to make. Look, gay means gay; or sometimes happy. Nothing else. Carry around a dictionary if you can’t figure out which words to use.

Further, I really think that we are at the point that complicity has been engaged. If you don’t see gay people as human beings that need to breathe, eat, learn, and love, and can be bled, broken, or hurt just as much as any straight human being, you’re anti-human rights. Go call black people ignorant for “choosing” to be a minority and autistic adults stupid for “choosing” to be mentally incapcitated. It doesn’t take having a gay son, brother, or cousin to see that life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness apply to all persons, gay or straight, black or white, or whatever.

I won’t say who I know or am related to who is gay, because it doesn’t matter. I’m a humanist. I believe all humans deserve the same rights. Period. If you disagree, that’s your right. But you’re anti-human rights. Good for you.

I spent some time thinking about the comment I am currently leaving. I felt I should share my ideas, corroborating yours; empathizing with the non “privileged”; expressing my gratitude for your checklist and realizing again that I am fortunate….
I however, could not find any reasonable way to do justice to what you have already said, so, I hope it’s not too GAY, but I will instead sum it up with this:

I’ve seen such on more than a few message boards – some sports, some not. LEGALLY site owners can say pretty much whatever they want and not hold themselves to the same standard they hold their minions… members. (NOT a dig at this site at all. Promise.) Pathetic but true.

Not exactly. Not an apology. But it saddens me that when positively commenting on such a post I feel like I first need to make clear I am not part of the group I support by my comment and only then start the comment – in this case: I am not gay and still support this opinion and thus the rights of those offended.

It’s 2009. That’s damn wrong.
