Could this be the Answer?

By mW on November 7, 2009

If the media had its way, the Hornets season would be over.  That way, big markets like New York, Los Angeles, Boston, and Chicago could get back to winning championships.  Never mind those pesky San Antonio, Orlando, or New Orleans teams that think they can win it all.  But that annoyance aside, New Orleans does have problems.  Nowhere is that more apparent than at the shooting guard position.

The word from Nola.com is Mo Pete is getting the hook next game in favor of Devin Brown.  If we’re really lucky, D-Brown will ultimately be replaced by B-Brown at the 2-guard.  Against Kobe Bryant.  Kobe has started off the season scorching, averaging 35-6-3-3, in about 40 minutes per game, and might have just taken it personally that LRJ was given the MVP last year.  Certainly, Devin won’t be able to stop him.  Neither will Bobby.  Mo is the best physical match against him, so the timing of the switch is suspect.  I’d say put Julian on him, but then who guards Artest?  West.  Then who guards Lamar?  Ugh.  Regardless of what insanity Coach Bryon Scott employs against the Lakers, it won’t work.  Kobe will score at least 40 and the Lakers will win by double-digits.  Count it.  But you know who could dish it right back to Kobe, or any other premier shooting guard?  Allen Iverson.

Kobe has never been able to stop A.I., and the task has usually gone to the other Laker guard.  But forget the Lakers, the bigger question is could Iverson be the answer to the Hornets problems at the 2-guard?  He’s really not happy playing in Memphis off the bench, and ownership is backing the coach, with whom A.I. doesn’t exactly see eye to eye.  And, now, Iverson’s taking a personal leave from the team.  Sounds like things aren’t working out.

So why not go after him?  Yes, I’m talking to you Jeff Bower.  Iverson only makes a touch over $3M per year, for just this year.  I mean, we could trade him for Hilton.  Maybe for both Browns.  Or maybe we could take him and Stackhouse for Mo Pete (sorry Mo).  However that math ultimately works out, it could be done, and reasonably so.

It might drive Byron nuts, but can you imagine the chaos that CP and A.I. would wreak on the Western Conference?  One former MVP and one one-day-to-be MVP attacking from anywhere, anytime, and dishing to Peja (swish), David (swish), or Emeka (slam)?  I definitely think it would be worth pursuing.   And, Mr. Shinn, it’d sure as hell fill any of those empty seats, that’s for sure.

The Hornets with Iverson is a team I’d pay to see.  Well, I already do.  So, it’d be a team I’d be really excited to see.  I don’t think I’d be the only one.  Except for other Western Conference coaches and gms.

Just like that, the power in the West would shift again.  Think about it, Jeff Bower.

  1. I could see it now. The team going for at least 2 or 3 consecutive possessions without CP touching the ball even once. LOL!

  2. If they could get Iverson for nothing, basically wait until he’s waived, then it’s low-risk-high-reward move. But it’s still not a move that puts them in the echelon with the Celtics, Magic, Lakers, Cavs and Spurs though.

  3. That would be interesting….

  4. Man what could it hurt. We need points, AI is DYIng to score? I mean our starting Shooting Guard is DEVON BROWN………………….(one second)…………(one more)……..ok now after taking that in try and say this is a bad idea. I mean dude Devon Brown

  5. Well, word is Iverson can’t be traded until December 15. I think if we haven’t figured out anything at the 2 then, you might see something happen. With only one year on A.I.’s contract, it’d be hard to say how it could hurt. If it works, Bower looks again like a genius. If not, he’s out in April.

  6. This would be pretty cool. Exciting to watch as Iverson/Wade backcourt. But everyone denounced it because it’d be too small a backcourt. I haven’t been following New Orleans at all, but do you N.O fans think it could work? Do ya’ll like AI?

  7. Love it.

  8. @Raj: well, Byron Scott is insistent in running a two PG system, with two shorter guards, like the old Pargo/Paul line, only now with Brown/Paul, and ostensibly Collison/Paul, so AI, who is a combo-guard (though natural 2), would be perfect for what he’s doing.

I’m not a big AI fan, but anything seems like it’s worth trying right now. We can’t get any worse defensively than we already are, so we might as well try to outscore some people instead of just sucking on both sides of the ball. Iverson is also an underrated passer, because he does take a ton of shots, but he can move the ball, I’m not hating this.

  10. I don’t know about A.I. comming on the Hornets. It would be interesting. Whats sad about A.I. is he was a supper pimp in the early 2000’s and is a questionable hall of fammer, but he will for ever be known as “practice” “practice” are we talking about “practice” I think all we need is practice practice all we need is practice practice!

  11. If the first few seconds of the game last night when kobe picked Ninja Turtle (Devin Brown) clean and dunked it, if that doesn’t say we need Allen Iverson I don’t know what does. Or maybe that it took us till like 3 mins left in the third to even score a fg, please give me some AI.

  12. We sorely need some points and not only from D-West, CP3…we need a shooting guard badly. I don’t know why we traded for Bobby Brown adn kept Devin Brown…and Mo Pete seems past his prime so we really need new blood and a slasher to the basket that can create his own shots. If we found someone along the lines of what Peja used to do (which is to swish baskets), then we’ll be back to how we were two years ago. Right now, NO really needs a trade. Badly.
(or maybe just start their rookies who seemed to do well last night in their limited time in playing)
